Cervical Ripening Balloon

Cervical ripening balloon is used for mechanical dilation of the cervical canalprior to labor induction at term when the cervix is unfavorable for induction.Itdoes not require traction,and creates steady pressure on both internal andexternal os throughout the dilation process.It also includes a stylet to facilitateplacement.

1.Insert the cervical ripening balloon through the cervix until both balloons haveentered thecervical canal.

2.Inflate the uterine balloon with 40ml of saline.

3.Once the uterine balloon is inflated,pull the device back until the balloon abutsthe internal cervical os.

4.The vaginal balloon outside the external cervical os should be seen.Inflate thevaginal balloon with 20ml of saline.

5.Once the balloons are situated on either side of the cervix,add saline --amaximum of 80ml per balloon,Time the placement of the balloon so that it is inplace no longer than 12 hours before active labor is induced.
